I was recently chatting about the future of Scotland and
humanity. A long term label for the process is ‘social development’. It has been
a hot topic in my thinking and writing for at least twenty years. As an educator
I was concerned with the process of ‘changing minds’ and this involved ‘hegemony’,
the ‘nature v nurture debate’, ‘mindfulness’, ‘evolutionary psychology’ and ‘brain
science’.
The following table offers annotated links to some of my
short essays.
2002 – jun – 01. “Hegemony
and the hidden persuaders - the power of un-common sense”
“It is not by accident that
we come by our 'common sense'. People who think freely and independently are
quick to realise how they have been taught to imprison and enslave
themselves. In breaking free they become the champions of un-common sense.
May their thoughts be clear, fruitful and infectious.”

2008 – jul – 16 “Nature Nurture Options”
“There are causes and conditions for our nature and our nurture and
in both cases these can be thought of as good, neutral or bad. By plotting
these options on a table we can generate nine viewpoints.”

2008 -Jul – 26; “Disciplined democracy”.
“Discipline is what causes you to behave this way rather than that.
In a well-disciplined democracy there will be forms of both external and
internal discipline and these can be thought of as more or less right or
wrong. There are four main patterns.”

2009 – Sep – 25; “STEEPLeS
is an acronym for the seven elements of a holistic and systematic development
framework for change for the better: Social Technological Environmental
Economic Political Legal Spiritual.”
|
2014 – mar – 02. “Is human
nature buddha nature?”
“The
mindbrain of a particular human being is conditioned in part by its nature,
in part by its nurture and in part by serendipity. (for optional patterns see
here ) The conditioning process ensures that the
individual grows and develops in a way that fits him to behave appropriately
in a particular physical and social environment.
